RAID Max Drive Capacity

$

Hello,

I would like to know if it is possible to create a RAID 1 array using 2x10 TB hard drives on a Z230 workstation with built-in RAID controller.

I have now a RAID 1 array with 2x4 TB hard drives, but I don't know if there is an upper limit to the drive storage capacity.

Thank you!

Regards.

EliteDesk 800 G1 and how to take ownership of TPM

I have over 30 EliteDesk 800 G1 that we have to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB and enable TPM 1.2 on so that we can use Bitlocker and whole disk encryption.  I configured one on my workbench with Windows 10 and updated to the latest BIOS (2.74 Rev.A).  I tried to apply SP82407 to update the Infineon chip tp 4.34.  When I do that, the update utility told me that TPM was not yet activated.  I used TPM.msc to activate TPM and it did.  I now have TPM 1.2 in the device manage.  So I ran the update utility again and it asked me for a owner password.  I tried taking ownership with TPM.msc and it seems to reset TPM, but I still do not get ownership.  What am I missing?

Unable to Capture HP T630 TC image

Hi,

I'm using HP Device Manager 4.7 SP7. I have my clients happily appearing under my HPDM gateway. I'm able to run a variety of tasks on these thin clients and all appears to be OK.

I tried to use the template '_Capture Image' and followed the instructions to capture one of my HP T630 Win10 IoT devices.

At first, all appeared OK, the thin client restarted and I was presented with a HP screen and a % as it captured an image. Then the T630 restarted and just attempts to PXE boot (which it cant do) and is left on a screen saying 'No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed'.

The HPDM has a status of these captures as 'transferring' and never seems to reach a 'failed' status.

Does anybody have any ideas what is going on?

I'm using my PC in a (home) workgroup. I don't work in a company network, nor do I use remote management. In UEFI I see a lot of options, like AMT, PCIe/PCI SERR#, Enable MS UEFI CA key, ...

I can't figure out what's the settings do or what's the effect of changing or keeping them.

Please help (pointing to) explanation or optimal settings.

Crisis Recovery Jumper Z620 Z420 Z820 Revealed

$

There have been questions on this forum about where is the Crisis Recovery Jumper for the Z620 Z420 and Z820 workstations.  First.... what is it?  It is a jumper that if shifted leftward from its default position it will initiate a semiautomated dump of a BIOS that is corrupted and allow last-gasp load of a non-corrupted BIOS that may allow a workstation to finally come back from a fatal condition.  This is clearly a very advanced procedure as you'll see.  Don't forget to move the jumper back to its default position when done.  My advice is to ignore this post unless you really have a dead end condition for your workstation.

This jumper exists but is little documented in the case of the Z820 and not documented at all in the Service Manual for the Z420 and the Z620.  I just have salvaged a bricked Z620 that I was asked to give a last try at before it went into the dumpster, and my old notes came in handy.  The post below is the best I can offer at this time, and it is hard to justify doing this procedure over and over to get it more precise.  Here it is:

Crisis Recovery Jumper Use in ZX20 Workstations – SDH

Excellent post, from Dan_WGBU, our favorite HP engineer:  LINK

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Jumpers-on-Z620-FMB-1102-motherboard/td-p/5705488

This post gives details from Ashleight-Paul on exactly how to do the process:   LINK

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Boot-and-Lockup/Z820-Bricked-Bios-after-Firmware-update/m-p/5718307/highlight/true#M37075

This post details the guy doing the process incorrectly and failing:  LINK

Do a Google search for “669531–005” to find the latest ZX20 technical and service manual, and download that.  Version 5, the last one published, is the one you want, and this link works:  LINK

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04205252

Z420 & Z620:  The designator is E15 = ROM bootblock recovery header = “E15” printed on motherboard at top left of jumper.  The position is not shown with a number or a marker on the service manual's MB diagram but it truly exists, and the Z820's MB diagram's #39 shows where it is also located on the Z420 and Z620 (which have almost identical motherboards and use the exact same BIOS).

Z220 & Z820:  Designator is E15 = BIOS Crisis recovery header/jumper = “JP15” or “E15” printed on motherboard.  It is #29 on Z220 SFF motherboard’s diagram; #34 on the Z220 CMT MB’s diagram; and #39 on the Z820 MB’s diagram.

Below are included my modifications to info from the Ashleigh-Paul post linked above:  Please note that my experience with this process was somewhat different, but the basics are here, and this did save the Z620 I was asked to try to salvage.  It would not boot into BIOS, and after a delay (with only a black screen showing) all the fans then ramped up to full speed and stayed that way.  Now it is back to normal.

  1. In the ZX20 workstations there is a motherboard header, E15, incompletely documented in the Technical and service manual, which can be used to force load of a BIOS .bin file from a USB drive into the motherboard. The position of this 3-pin jumper is partially documented in the technical manual, but the position for the Z420/Z620 virtually identical motherboards is the same as its position on the Z820 motherboard.  The Z220 SFF and CMT motherboards have two different positions, which are documented in the manual.  There is a big difference between a restart and a cold boot (from power fully off).  You must follow the instructions below exactly:
  2. Power off the workstation and unplug the power cord.
  3. Change the jumper position from bridging pins 1-2 (the default condition) to bridging pins 2-3. In the Z420/Z620/Z820 the E15 motherboard header is between the bottom PCI white connector and the next up PCIe black connector.  Pin 1 is the far left (towards the workstation's backplane).
  4. Have a non-NTFS formatted small USB2 drive with the target BIOS .bin file on it, at the top level of the drive, and plug that in to the TOP FRONT USB2 port of the workstation. You could also use a rear USB2 port.  Do not use a USB3 port.  For the current 4/18 BIOS for the Z420/Z620 version 1 and 2 workstations the BIOS is 3.92, and the .bin file you would have on the thumb drive should be named J61_0392.bin.  This can be harvested from the BIOS SoftPaq by auto-unpacking it and going into the SWSetup folder that creates on the root level of C drive, and then going into the source SP84163 folder that is created in SWSetup, and go into the DOS folder that is in there, and copy out that .bin file.  You can turn off hiding of extensions of known file type in the Folder view tab control panel to make this easier to find (I keep that setting unchecked always).
  5. Plug in power cord, power up, and wait.... you should see it blink the USB stick on, and then 7 red lights/beeps from the workstation. NOW wait.... the workstation will auto-reboot, DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING!
  6. It will restart and you will get blinking USB Stick, and red lights flashing (but this time 8) and then a few seconds later the workstation's lights will go blue and the BIOS will come on. DONT TOUCH YET!
  7. The workstation will restart again, and the BIOS screen will start, NOW PULL THE USB STICK OUT, and you will see BIOS firmware flash itself.
  8. The workstation will now auto-restart, and flash 9 times and then fully auto-shut itself off.
  9. Unplug the power cord, and don’t forget to set the recovery jumper back to its default position (bridging pins 2-3).  That is, shift it back to the far right on the pins, where you found it before starting the process.
  10. Plug back in the power cord, power up, and restore any settings you had in the BIOS, and BIOS should be back to working properly.

Again, the number of beeps likely varies with the particular problem(s) that this advanced firmware mechanism encounters, as it did in my case.  This is a last ditch effort procedure so I had no hesitation to experiment until I succeeded.

Here is a picture and an engineering display of the crisis recovery jumper present on all Z420/Z620 motherboards:

Z600 not posting PCIe Card that previously worked

I'm having a frustrating time at the moment with attempting to get my HP Z600 Workstation to pick up my ASmedia ASM1061 based SATA 3 Add-in PCIe Card, the card previously worked in the Z600, no problems, but since I forced my PC to shutdown by holding the power button the PCIe Card no longer appears/posts, the card works in another system straight away with no configuration so it's not broken/dead, also I have test the SATA 3 Card in other PCIe slots on my Z600 and It still doesn't post, I've tried other devices in the various PCIe Slots to ensure they work and they do without any complications, I have reset the BIOS, Reset the CMOS, nothing I do seems to get the system to pick up the SATA 3 Card despite it previously working without any issues, I've tried tweaking various BIOS settings but I don't have a full understanding of what exact settings I need, but I know that it was working before I forced shutdown and now it doesn't work/doesn't appear, what can I do to fix this? Any help would be appreciated as it's baffled me what's happened with my Z600

HP Z620 does not boot with >4TB HDD installed

Hi everyone, I am running into a problem on boot with my HP Z620.

When I have hard drives larger than 4TB installed I cannot get beyond the HP logo screen, ie the system will not POST. Hitting F9 or F10 will show the messages "entering boot menu" or "entering setup" respectively but I cannot go beyond this.

If the drives are installed once I have reached the boot menu or hot-swapped once I am in the OS everything is functional. All of my data is there and a SMART test returns no problems. I have had no issues with any of my other HDDs or SSDs (all <4TB)  in various formats - ExFAT, NTFS, HFS+ ...

This issue also only arises when the drives are formatted. When they are uninitialised I am able to get to the boot menu/BIOS with no problem. The BIOS also is able to recognise that they are connected and have a certain size. I have tried plugging the drives into every SATA port on the motherboard with the same problem.

Has anybody else come across this issue?

Is there a maximum HDD or Volume size that the BIOS can handle?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Augustin

Z820 no post, loud fans, solid blue led

I got Z820 and the issue is the pc wont boot at all. I press power and fans (cpu, mem) are blowing 100% really loud. Fans on the back ramp up but gradually. There are no beeps or led flash, blue led is constantly on, there is also green led on the psu.

Ram(ecc hp branded) and cpu are good as I tested them in other PC.

I did try this https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Boot-and-Lockup/Z820-Bricked-Bios-after-Firmware-update/td-p/5718307 usb thumb drive is not blinking and if I plug the keyboard in and press numlock key there is no led on the keyboard so it tells me that there is no power to the usb ports.

There is no visual damage to the board and no bend pins on the sockets.

PC does beep 3 times and flashes 3 times red if I pull the cpu out.

Thats the confusing part for me, if the board "knows" cpu isnt in place, why doesnt it signal other issues as clearly there is an issue?

I dont want to buy new MB :/

Hello,

My name is John Eline and I received an email from HP concerning a Recommended Driver Alert for the

NVIDIA Quadro Professional Driver Windows 10 (x64).

HP Z400 rejecting compatible Crucial RAM

$

I have a HP Z440 with 2 x 8GB 2133MHz sticks of DDR4 RAM.

I purchased 2 additional sticks of 8GB 2666Mhz Crucial DDR4 RAM - the Crucial website scanned my system and stated that it was compatible.

When I install the new RAM the motherboard starts up with a red flashing light, there is a warning beep that just keeps sounding, and the system does not boot. I left it to sort itself out and my fans started to speed up to maximum, which I thought meant it was all getting too hot and so I shutdown and removed the RAM. I have tried lots of different positions, and just one stick at a time, and nothing changes.

Why is this RAM not working?

I have tried to look in BIOS (using ESC, F8, F10) to see if I need to change anything but I cannot find any settings related to RAM that I can change. The computer can cope with additional RAM.

I'm wondering if the RAM is faulty?

Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro was Fast, but Now has Poor RAID 0 Performance

I am having a peculiar problem. My PC is a Z840 dual processor machine and am running Windows 10 for Workstations. About 9 months ago I added a Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro card populated with four 512 GB SM951 modules to my Z840. I added the card in the suggested PCi slot, Slot 6, which is a PCIe3X16 slot. I used Windows Drive Manager to create 4 drive stripped (RAID 0) volume. I checked the speed of the volume using AJA system test, and it recorded a 5853 MB/SEC write score and a 5405MB/SEC read score, which is about where the card should perform. Crystal Disk Mark posted similar scores.

A couple of days ago I ran the test again and to my surprise the card was 1711 writes and 1899 reads, which is about what one SM951 should be. Crystal Disk Mark posted similar scores.

I begun to try to fix the speed decrease. I deleted the stripped volume and recreated it. The scores remained the same. I then configured the 4 drives as simple drives, and they all recorded over 2000 for reads and about 1600 for writes, which is about right. So it seems the problem is not with the drives themselves.

I looked in my bios, which is the latest, and slots Slots 6 is recorded as operating at 8G and PCLe 3x16. I only have two other cards: my graphics card and an HP Thunderbolt card. Both seem to be working fine.

I also took the card out and reseated it. This didn’t help.

I have yet to try a different PCLe 3x16 slot as one is occupied by my graphics card (Slot 2), with would probably hit the SATA cable headers if it was moved to Slot 6, and the other PCLe 3x16 slot (Slot 5) is next to my Thunderbolt card, which would result in the two cards and their fans directly facing each other.

I also have yet to do a bios downgrade.

In short, my Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro was working in RAID 0 as it should. Now its speed is that of a single SM951. As I mentioned, if the drives are set up as 4 separate (non-RAIDed) drives, they work as they should. However I don’t want to have four separate drives. I want a single 2T RAID 0 drive with 6 G transfers as it had.

Hi Everyone!

I got a second hand HP Z620 recently. I've upgraded the gpu to GTX 1070Ti (MSI AERO Blower Style Fan) . In Furmark stress test it's stable at 84 C on base clock. How can I bring down the temp because I rather it run in lower temp because I use it for rendering and high performance needed stuff and I might need to overclock it too.
