HP Device Manager 4.7 SP 7 - Managing Windows 10 IoT Windows Licenses

$

I am working on deploying HP T530 Thin Clients with Windows 10 IoT, and am wondering how the licenses can be managed on a static image.

Windows 10 IoT is requiring a unique key be applied to each thin client, which is generally fine since they each come with one, however, the HP Device manager does not seem to have a way to save the key from a thin client and then deploy that key after imaging.

has anyone worked through this issue yet?

Thanks!

System BIOS issues - how do I restore to latest version?

$

Last week I downgraded the BIOS on my HP Z440 Workstation to version 1.62 Rev A. I got the bits and the instructions from the HP Drivers and Software support page for the product:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-z440-workstation/6978828

The issue that I was seeing is that after turning on the PC, there was no signal coming out of the DMS-59 port (on the NVIDIA 315 NVS graphics card that I was using). I've connected a DMS-VGA adapter and then try connecting the VGA cable to a display port on a Dell monitor, but the monitor is not picking up a signal--previously (before the BIOS downgrade) it was working fine. All other lights and noises on the desktop computer leave no indication that anything is wrong--but I have no way of checking because I cannot see the display of the computer. I have an ethernet cable attached to it and am able to use the command prompt on a different computer to successfully ping the HP Z440 that is having issues. I would just remote into it, but I never "enabled" remote connection in the HPZ440's settings.

I tried seeking help on a different forum (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Video-Display-and-Touch/Graphics-output-doesn-t-work-after-I-downgraded-system-BIOS/m-p/6603472/Pop_SU#M100334) but was instructed to come here.

At this point, I don't even want this older BIOS version, I am fine with the latest BIOS version. I tried restoring the BIOS following the instructions on this page :

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05163478

but only could get to step 8. (I had heard the 8 beep audio code, but then the system never turned back off).

Any suggestions? The computer is new, so I have no problem doing a full blown restore, although I thought that's what that document that I just listed was aimed at.

HP ProDesk 600 Mini G1 desktop, not seeing SSD drives randomly (NO SYSTEM DRIVE ERROR)

$

We have 16x HP ProDesk Mini G1 desktop in the company, all purchased together in August 2015 (still covered by 3y warranty, but it doesn't matter) who are all coming with 500 GB 7200 RPM HDD from the factory. Since they were pretty slow PCs, we decided to upgrade all of them with some high performance ADATA Ultimate SU800 128GB SSD (ASU800SS-128GT-C) about a year ago, 128GB is large enought because we have file servers and PC only have Office 2016 (O365) installed... The overall performance upgrade is monstruous and we are extremely satisfied of the tiny investment ($).

But we have a totally random issue with all of the 16x PCs, were it may happens like once per 2-3 months, where a user simply reboot the computer (soft-reboot, from Windows 10 start menu), then the computer are not seeing the SSD anymore and indicate "NO SYSTEM DRIVE PRESENT" at boot. The fix is extremly simple, the user only have to power OFF the computer and start it again and 100% of the time, it work flawlessly. I first suspected something with the BIOS version, so I updated all my ProDesk to the lastest BIOS from HP... but the problem is still present, very randomly, but still affecting all of the 16x PCs.

It's defenitely not a big issue, but I would like to know if maybe there's a permanent fix for this issue? Maybe it's a BIOS setting who needs to be changed from factory default? PLEASE NOTE that I would not suspect any incompatibility issue with the SSD drive model itself, because on the 16x desktops, I also have 3x of them I had upgraded to SSD earlier using Kingston and Crucial SSD drives and who have SAME ISSUE. So only 13x of my ProDesk have the ADATA SSD but all 16x are affected.

Thank you very much.

Deskpro EXM original dual-boot config?

$

Having recently acquired an ancient Deskpro EX (EXM/P800/20c/6/128cn UK), I was wondering what the original layout of the operating systems was on this machine?

I've been able to deduce that it was supplied with a dual install of NT 4 Workstation and 2000 Professional on a 20GB drive - would I be right in thinking that NT4 was installed on a 2GB FAT16 partition and 2K would have taken the rest of the drive on an NTFS partition? Does that seem correct for the standard layout?

Any clues would be appreciated!

Hot swap drives in Z600 Z400 Z800 v2

$

0

EDIT:  This feature is not supported by HP, and there are different types of eSATA "bridges" that have their own unique characteristics that might interfere with its functionality.  For example, I have some eSATA drives that automatically power down into a personal sleep type mode after a certain period of inactivity, and others that do not (this auto-power-down happens even if the OS is being used but the drive itself has not been  accessed during the time period).  You'll just need to experiment.

We've been using eSATA external drives for HP workstation image captures (via Acronis True Image software) for years now.  This allows backup and the ability to clone from that image to another identical (or similar) properly licensed workstation assuming the HP OEM COA auto-activation type of Restore/Recover installer has been used for the original build.

Back with the xw6400 there was no eSATA setting in BIOS, but I found I could use a short high quality eSATA adapter/external eSATA cable to the external eSATA drive and that would work fine.  The adapter SATA data plug was attached to the last motherboard SATA port.  Then came the xw6600 which has an eSATA option in BIOS for specific ports.  Then the xw4600 with an eSATA port built in to the rear of the case.  Then the Z400/Z600/Z800 series.

These ZX00 workstations have a special capability I've discovered..... Hot Swap.  My workstations in this series all are version 2 ones, with the later boot block date you can read up on here in the forum, but I believe this will work with the earlier version 1 ones.  First I'll describe an eSATA drive hooked up like back with the xw6400 which had no eSATA setting in BIOS.  In both cases below the same motherboard-to-backplane SATA to eSATA form factor adapter is used, and the same high quality external eSATA cable and eSATA drive are used.  For these external eSATA drives I always go to the properties of the drive and turn off the auto-indexing feature so the OS does not waste time indexing these big drives.  They are connected only for the image capture or clone process and I don't want/need that feature.

The default BIOS settings way:  In BIOS under the Storage heading inside the Storage Options option (where SATA Emulation should be set to RAID + AHCI) there is a listing of the 6 motherboard SATA ports.  The default for the last port is just like the other 5, and leave it that way for this experiment.  If your eSATA external drive is powered up and attached (via the adapter) to that last port then when you boot you will see it just like any other internal drive.  You won't see it as a removable drive.  You can read from it or add to it, but you should not hot plug it in or unplug it, or power it down just like you would not do that with an internal drive on a running computer.

The eSATA BIOS settings way:  In BIOS for that last port (and also the next to the last port) you can run through special options such as running that port at full SATA II speeds or dropping them to SATA I speeds, or running them at as eSATA at SATA II speeds,  or eSATA at SATA I speeds.  Set that last port to eSATA at the faster SATA II speeds for this experiment, and that is what I keep that last (sixth) port set at all the time.

Here is where Hot Swapcomes in.  It turns out that if you use that special eSATA type of setting you can have the external eSATA drive turned off but with the eSATA cable attached and when you want to use the drive you just power it up, and you'll hear the chime as if a thumb drive had just been plugged in.  The drive becomes visible, usable, and you can also properly disconnect it from the OS using the normal taskbar icon.  You'll then hear the usual chime as if you were properly removing a thumb drive.  If your BIOS settings for this port are set back to its default rather than the eSATA option you won't have this removable drive capability, and the taskbar icon for removing a removable drive will not be visible.

As with a thumb drive you should always properly use the taskbar icon for disconnecting the drive from the OS before you physically disconnect it (or power it down).  The idea is that the OS needs to prepare to lose access to the drive, and perhaps finish some data transfer in the last moment.  This feature works for eSATA external drives that have a HDD or a SSD within.  I also have experimented with 3.5" and 5.25" form factor "receivers" mounted inside these workstations with external access to receive 2.5" or 3.5" drives mounted in their matching "carrier".  This allows me to plug in a removable drive to the receiver and it will automatically power up, mount in the OS, and chime that it is ready to go (pretty much instant).  I can later properly disconnect it on the OS level using the taskbar icon and then on the physical level to replace it with another drive (in its own carrier), and on.

This may be of value to some.  I have not done these experiments with the Z620 or Z640 workstations yet but that would be easy to check.

upgrade for xw8400 CPU

I have an HP xw8400 desktop. It has: (2 processors) Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 5160 @ 3.00GHz / 3.00 GHz  Installed RAM is 32.0 GB with a 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor.

Computer runs slow and hot. It runs ok (slow but ok) for a while, but when the software I use speeds up, I get a notice that says CPU is at max 100% copacity. (It can't keep up with the only software I am running)  It also loses internet connection at times. but reconnects pretty quickly on its own.

I've been told the computer is too old to fit my needs, and I should purchase a new one. I thought I might check first to see if I can upgrade the CPU's and whatever else that would imporve performance.  Will this work to speed up comuter?  Is there another fan source that would cool the computer better?

Because I am not that computer savvy, I obviously need advice, and I will need some help with installation. Perhaps a clue as to how to find reliable installer near me?

Thanks for any help or suggestions

PCI (non-Express) graphics card gives 6 beep error on boot

I'm using a Z620 as a headless server, but need a graphics card installed for the occacional maintenence. To save PCIe slots for better use (e.g. SSD blades) I thought of using the old PCI port for the graphics card. However, when installning a graphics card in that slot the machine does not boot and gives a 6 beep error (problem with graphics).

The graphics card I'm trying to use is an ATI Rage XL.

Secure boot is disabled and legacy mode endabled in BIOS.

BIOS is updated to the latest version.

Any suggestions how I can get this running?

Windows 10 IoT upgrade on HP t520 thin client

Hi,

I have a couple of t520's deployed in our workshop, all using HPs ThinPro 6.2.

We just got a new client that had Windows 10 IoT installed. I now would like all my clients upgraded to Windows 10 IoT and from what I understand after reading you need to purchase a license in order for the install to activate and to get past BIOS check on installation.

Question 1) Is it even possible to install Windows 10 IoT on HP t520 Thin client?

Question 2) Where can/should I purchase the licenses needed? From Microsoft? From HP? 3rd party?

Thank you for helping out, upgrading thin clients is completely new teritory for this IT admin.

Copy from / to USB3 drive slows down complete System

Hi,

we got 3 identical z440 worstations here an since we installed win10 pro 64 we got massive problems with the usb performance. When copying from internal drive to connected usb stick or drive the whole systems slows down an you cant use mouse or keyboard because of dropouts. Same probleme when copying from external drive to internal or external drive. it doesent matter wich usb port you use (front, rear, usb2/3)...

All drivers are up to date, bios too.

Win10 was installed fresh (no upgrade).

Does anyone know what can cause this weird problem?

Edit: I doesent matter what kind of drive you use (aktive/passive hdd, sticks...).

Looking for an HP resource

$

So trying to Contact HP, not as a support role, but they make it increasingly difficult to just ask a question.

I have 2 HP HPE 1224 Desktops...Love them, and am looking for a resource to purchase another one.

Just wanted to find out where HP sent these in order to enquire about any for sale.

Anyone happen to know of a resource for the 1224 Desktop's that wouldn't mind passing along so I can potentially get a couple more.?

I am in Canada, and have tried all the usual outlets, kijiji, letgo, UsedToronto etc...

Have tried from vancouver to Newfoundland, but can't seem to find one.

Any I do find are either in Australia, or the U.K. and shipping would be as much as the unit itself.

Surely somewhere, HP has a stack of these things and would like to get rid of them.

THanks in advance
