Which is the true x16 slot and which is the down-clock one?

Page 51 in the manual has typo somewhere.  The diagram points the black PCIe one as the x16 slot.  While the table shows the white one being the x16 slot.

thank you.

Elite 8200 SFF Bios password not stored - FW 02.29 Rev.A

Hello

We have a number of HP Compaq 8200 Elite SFF PC's. After updating the BIOS to version 02.29 Rev.A, the BIOS Setup password cannot be set. You can set it in the BIOS, it appears to be fine, but after a reboot the password is no longer in affect, going in to setup no longer requires the password. A reset to Factory defaults has no effect, a CMOS Reset has also had no affect. We also have a number of HP Compaq 6200 Pro SFF PC's which appear to use the same version of BIOS FW (0.229) which apply the setup password as expected.

Any ideas what is going on?

Thank you

Z400 chipset temperature

Hello, I want to ask what is your chipset temperature when computer is in IDLE? I want to know what can be possibly lowest idle temp for chipset, with stock heatsink, so I have some reference in my manipulations/tweks, which I'm doing right now.

Do you know what is thermal limit for chipset (like they give for processors) ?

Possibly best would be if you give value, when just enter BIOS, stay there couple of minutes and display temperatures from BIOS menu. Below attached my case.

In my case this for instance 65 Celsius degrees, even with small fan attached to heatsink. Ambient temp is 25. I'm sure it's too high.

Recently I removed heatsink and changed thermal paste, so I have doubts if that went well. It's worse than before.

Here you can see what I have already done: old thermal paste was 6 years old, so I decided to change it...

disable POST Errors?

Hello Community,

i am running a Z420 workstation as a Host for a few VMs.

By doing so i connected the front-USB3 plug to a pcie USB3 card while the header on the motherboard is connected to a PCI-Bracket on the back.

Thing is that this way in POST the machine is complaining about 'Front USB3 is not connected' , however i can press F1 on a keyboard connected to the bus on the PCI-bracket (thus mainboard header) to skip the message ?

Is there any way to disable the POST Errors?

Thanks a lot

Change values for HP Velocity in ThinPRO

$

At our company, we use mostly HP ThinClients with ThinPro operating system which comes with HP Velocity software.

This software is a pain for us since we are using VoIP client in ThinPro and HP Velocity make changes in the packets sent over the network which makes the VoiP client not able to login to the server.

Turning off HP Velocity solves this for most of the time, but somehow, even if it's turned off, something is not completely off regarding Velocity which sometimes still changes the header of the  packages thus making VoIP impossible.

I have googled this alot and found out that there is something called "IP Option Beacon" that does this.

In ThinPRO there is an option called ipOptionMark=1 in a file related to Velocity that can be changed to =0 that solves this.

On page 37-38 in the Velocity manual this is explained.

http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c04867252-1.pdf

I have done what is written there and it works fine and solves our problem, but as stated on page 37 as a note, setting in that file in that location is wiped after reboot which is totally correct, but no where in the manual is there any mention of how to make this change permanent.

Can anyone please help out with this?

ThinPro hpdmagent restart HPDM task

On a local bash I can use:

service hpdmagent --full-restart

and it works, but not within a HPDM task.

Is there a possibility to restart the HPDM agent by HPDM Task?

I have tried following ways with and without sudo:

1. _File and Registry > Script

service hpdmagent --full-restart

2. _File and Registry > Script-File

Deploy Script-File

Run Script-File

With both ways the agent stops but don't restarts and the tasks is still running "in progess"!

Kind regards

Lukas

Hi I have 2 rp7800 which are on a epos network.

Issues are that when using epos of the second till which is the slave, pressing the touch screen can result in being very unresponsive and you have to keep pressing for a response.  This is causing issues when serving a customer as it makes the process slow.  The master is fine.

Any ideas

Windows 7 won't boot up on HP Z420

$

Hi everyone,

I attempted to reinstall Windows 7 Pro on my HP Z420 Workstation. I rebooted the computer with the installation disk and received this error report:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disk and restart your computer.

2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."

3. Click "Repair your computer."

But when I follow these instructions, I receive this message:

This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows.

Clicking "Install now" also doesn't work. I've tried every possible option, and my computer won't boot. So I tried calling Microsoft, and I was told that it's likely a problem with the motherboard or the hard drive and that I should contact HP.

Thanks very much to anyone who'll help me through this!

HP Workstation Z400 Quadro FX 3800 Fail after VBIOS update

$

Hello.

First of all i want to tell you that i'm IT pro, with full working repair laboratory. (DIgital OSC, re-flow Machine, etc...)

I have buy 4 HP Z400 Workstations for re-sell, i decide to update the BIOS of the Z400 and the VBIOS of the Qadro FX 3800.

With the first PC all goes well, but with the second the system freeze after i run the VBIOS update the screen goes black and nothing happent for the next 3 hours that i left the machine after that i reset it and i get 6 beeps. :-(

I put out the ATMEL (at24c16b) VBIOS to re-programm it from a BIOS image that i get from the first succesfull Z400, but again i get 6 beeps, then i get the .ROM file (FX3800_100909_62.00.77.00.06_07550500.rom) from the update files and re-program the ATMEL but again i get 6 beeps, if i insert the other card that is working then the machine is working fine.

So the question is.. is VBIOS fault? or evil coincidence that the card is bad?

Thanks for the time.

HDD (tested working) will intermittently drop offline, then come back.

Hi,

My HP Z840 is experiencing an intermittent hard drive drop-out.

I am running a simple array of drives (no RAID), 3 x 4TB HDDs (WD RE2 and Gold), 2 x Intel 750 PCIe NVMe SSDs and a Samsung SSD in a 3.5 adapter bay. 1125w PSU.

Only one drive is dropping out, assigned J:. It will disappear, causing errors, and then come back. Occasionally Windows says it 'needs to be formatted'. This is not the case and it picks up fine.

I had one 4tb WD drive there, so upon thinking it was a problem with the drive, replaced it immediately.

However, the problem is still there with the new drive, which suggests a fault elsewhere.

Further to this, I reassigned all drives to a new hard drive controller (from the SAS system, to new ports which are SATA). This made no difference. So it's unlikely to be the drive, or the controller.

What else could it be? Cables? Anything else?

I think the Z840 has built in cables, is it possible to replace them?

thanks

Tom

M.2 PCIe SSD in xw and Z400 Z600 Z800 workstations

$

HP has the G1 and G2 versions of the Z Turbo Drive but those are for HP workstations later than the Z400/Z600/Z800.  What about us with those or even us using the still excellent xw6400/8400/6600/8600/4600 generation of workstations?

I am now running the Kingston Predator M.2 PCIe 240GB card as my boot drive in one of my W7Pro64 Z600 workstations, and it is running great.  I also did some testing and got that up and running in one of my xw6400 and xw6600 workstations.  Have not yet tried it on a spare xw4600 but have no reason to believe it will not work in that too.  The Z800 works this way just like the Z600.

I'll post more details when I get more time.  HP has two storage controller drivers listed for the ZX00 series and the more recent one (11.5.4.1001) did not work when I updated to that, so stick with the original (9.6.0.1014).  Blue screen the instant boot went beyond BIOS.  Also, my Acronis clone software would not clone over correctly until I changed image capture type to sector by sector.  I used DiskPart to clear the Predator before doing the clone.  Breakthrough came from a clean install, from scratch, so I knew then that it could work and then I worked my way back to the two tricks above.

It is very fast, and stable.  For those who pay attention to such things:  This upgrade is not like we experienced going from HDD to SSD.  The feel is more like an upgrade from a moderate to a very fast video card.  Noticable jump in speed, for sure, and well worth it.

You want to place that in a PCIe slot that is generation 2 or higher, and has at least x4 lanes.  For my particular Z600 (my main home office workstation) I have a HP "2x2" Texas Instruments chipset USB3 card up in the top PCIe slot that would work for this, so I put the Predator card down in the lower PCIe x16 slot you'd normally think of as for a second video card.  For those with xw6400 workstations there are zero PCIe Gen 2 slots so you'll run at 1/2 speed.  For the xw6600 and xw4600 the two PCIe x16 slots are Gen 2 so use the lower of those for this card.  You can look up the PCIe slot type posiitons of your ZX00 workstations in the technical and service manual.  The Predator is a PCIe Gen 2 card that can run through 4 PCIe lanes so you want to at least give it that.  When you see "PCIe2 x16 (x8 electrical)" in a manual that means it is a PCIe generation 2 slot (higher speed) and though it is x16 morphology for the slot it only has 8 PCIe lanes available for use.  It is fine to put this card in a slot that has higher capabilities than the card itself, but you'll get no added speed benefit from that.  The notation is still evolving and HP has older notations in the old manuals.  None of these workstations have PCIe generation 3 slots.

The ZX00 series are SATA generation II workstations, and this is one way to break through the speed limits of that.  I'm using the Predator as my boot/applications drive, and just put in a nice enterprise grade 500 GB Samsung SSD as my "documents" drive.  That combo is very fast.

The HP Z Turbo M.2 cards are two types:  the G1 has an AHCI type of controller and the G2 has a NVMe type.  The G2 is officially only supposed to work in the ZX40 generation of workstations.  You might have a shot at getting the G1 to work on the ZX00 series workstations but I don't think anyone will ever get the G2 to work in those because of the chipset and BIOS limitations of the ZX00 series.  One of our very creative forum members did figure out a workaround to get a G2 to work in his ZX20 workstation (I think it was a Z420), which is not supposed to be possible.  That is an example of something that worked but is surely not "supported" by HP.  The ZX20 and ZX40 generations, however, have a lot in common but there is a big gulf between those and the ZX00 generation.  For the G2 in ZX20 workaround see towards the bottom of this page  HERE.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/NVMe-PCIe-SSD-boot-support-in-Z820/td-p/5056550/page/4

The Predator M.2 PCIe card has an AHCI type of controller, and is proven to work so I'm advising my need-for-speed friends to go for that now in their ZX00 and xw6600/xw8600 and xw4600 HP workstations.

I've just taken delivery of 3 Z840 Workstations with Turbo Drive G2 SSDs, none of which I can get to boot.

The SSDs are not shown as a UEFI boot device in BIOS (v02.26)

After looking high and low online, I havent had any success with any of the 3 machines. I believe Windows 7 is installed on the disk, but I can't get the machines to recognise them.

The spec is 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2650, 64GB RAM, NVIDIA M4000 GPU, Turbo Drive G2 SDD

Can anyone help?
