Neccessary CPU heatsink for E5 1680 v3

$

Dear community,

I´m using a 3 year old Z440 workstation running a Xeon E5 1620 v3 quad core CPU for 3D-Design and rendering. The CPU heatsink is the standard HP 749554-001 that came with the system. I´ve got my eyes on a refurbished E5 1680 v3 octa core CPU to bring the workstation up to date, being able to use it for another 2 to 3 years.

The question is, is anybody running the 1680 v3 CPU with the standard heatsink and can recommend it or will I need I need to buy the HP Z Cooler (HP P/N: 781907-001) to keep it from overheating. The HP Z cooler manual says so, but I thought I´d get some advice from all of you :).

And yes, the machine might be continuously  rendering 3D jobs for for 2 to 3 days .

Best regards

Chris

Hi,

I am setting up a Xen server upon a debian Linux on a Z800 workstation.
I have seen previous people giving up on this task.

          https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Z800-E5620-vt-d-amp-vt-x/td-p/6555598
My question:
is it possible to get a workaround to make it work (sth on bios or card or whatever prevent execution ) ?
I guess some bios patch from HP should solve it but..

here output from XL dmesg:

Is RST 13 the latest version for a Z230 tower running Windows 10-64 Pro?

Please feel free to comment on any of our assumptions, conclusions and actions!

Upgrading in-place from Win7Pro to Win10Pro has gone quite smoothly in conjunction with updating the SATA SSD system drive and upgrading to an NVME data drive.  The in-place upgrade is necessary because of multiple necessary programs whose install and update files are not available.

We stayed with Legacy BIOS instead of going with UEFI, as our understanding is that a complete OS reinstall would have been required.

RAID is chosen in BIOS as the disk protocol and likewise Intel RST is authorized in the BIOS. The Intel RST software is installed in Win10, a carryforward from Win7.  Our understanding is that at the very least, the RST drivers have allowed the SATA system drive to continue to be GPT instead of the usual AHCI or IDE MBR.

So, with that as prelim info, our question is whether the HP-provided Intel RST version 13.0.0.1098 is in fact the latest and best s/w and driver package as recommended by the HP Support Assistant.

We have just now re-discovered the HP Image Assistant, which recommends an update to the Intel Management Engine Interface, but do not understand that to be of consequence.

Thx. ITG

HP Driver recognised as a Virus by Windows Defender

Dear community,

Windows Defender recognizes the Microfon driver Win32/MicTrayDebugger as a virus.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/threats/malware-encyclopedia-description?Name=MonitoringTool:Win32/MicTrayDebugger
I have tried to update the driver to delete and to install it again.

Windows changes the "official" driver to a newer one from May.19 and it recognised as a virusplease  see screenshots.
by official I mean

Hp Z220 HD failure, replace or new PC?

$
0
0

I posted a while back about the fact my Z220 workstation was running slow. Wb2001 suggested it may be the hard drive, so I ordered a new one. I was unlucky in that the new drive was faulty (it works but is noisy all of the time and in trying to solve the issue an error came up) so I ended up plugging the old one back in temporarily. I'd also tweaked a couple of other things at this point and all was well until a couple of days ago when old hard drive did finally (quite suddenly, apart from a couple of very slight odd noises the day before) die. So enormous thanks to Wb2001 for mentioning the life span of hard drives as even though the new HD isn't running quite right and I need to sort something asap, I did at least have a back up of my OS and most things that weren't on my other backup when the old drive failed.

Anyway, getting to the point. The PC is currently limping along on the faulty new HD which I know is risky. I've had it for six and a half years now, and I can't decide whether to buy a new computer. I'd like an all in one really as this one takes up so much space + the wires drive me crazy, but part of me is really tempted just to try again with a new HD and keep it going for a bit longer. I was just wondering if anyone here had any thoughts about how long other components last, mainly PSU etc, and if it's worth doing the new HD thing and sticking with the computer a bit longer, or should I use this as an excuse to buy a new one? 😅 The workstation has got 16GM RAM, a decent processor (Intel Xeon E3 1245 v2) and when functioning usually does what I need it to, sometimes I'd like it to be a bit quicker though, and it has no graphics card which I sometimes feel I could benefit from.

Thanks for reading 🙂

Z420 (WM521ET#ABZ) Upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10

$

Hi there,

I was sent an email by Microsoft telling me that they will no longer be supporting Windows 7 in 2020 and so I need to consider either running an unpatched Win 7 or upgrading to Windows 10 in due course.

Because of this I wanted to ask the community if they had managed to do this to a machine they own and whether I might experience any problems while doing this myself. I have tried to list the questions below.

1. Are drivers for Windows 10 available from HP for the Z420 so you can physically run the OS without problems?

2. My preferred upgrade path would be to simply purchase a new SSD, and then mount the HD as primary and install the OS as if it were a new machine. I would simply make the current HD (currently running Win 7) a slave or secondary drive.

Whilst attempting to see if this question had been raised before I found this thread, where another user had listed some configurations for drivers that needed to be installed. Did this list get finalized? I also found the following this thread that talked about some issues with upgrading the bios. The bios is something that I need to understand better.

Perhaps because I am simply going to be installing Windows 10 as a completely clean install then the bios issues will not come up but I would be happy to hear any feedback you can give so I can attempt to plan the migration of my amazing Z420 without wanting to shoot myself in the process.

Thanks

Better graphic card for a HP Z640

Hi guys

I just bought an HP Z640 with the E5-2620v4 2.1 2133 8C. The included graphic card is a NVIDIA Quadro K4graphics.

I will be using this for video streaming using Wirecast, and the multiview (I intend to connect 2 monitors 4K) is quite graphics card hungry. I also plan to be gaming with VR. Which more modern and powerful cards will work on this model?

Thanks a lot

Z820, what kind of graphics card -- blower or open air fan?

$

Hi there,

Recently I got a used Z820 (twin E5-2667v2, 64 GB RAM, 1125 W power supply). This machine comes with two additional fans on the side of the 3.5" drive bays.

I want to upgrade the system with an RTX 2060 (or thereabouts) graphics card.

Should I go for a founder's edition blower style cooling design or an open air fan design? Or does it not matter?

Any leads on this would be much appreciated.

The system is mainly used for image processing in darktable. Possibly the odd helicopter ride in X-Plane.

Cheers,
Joerg

HP Z210 CPU FAN BACKPLATE

Hi All

I'm getting a little fed up trying to resolve my issue and thus resulted on coming on here and I hope someone can help

I have an old HP Z210 CMT Workstation which I use for my backups. However, the case has been damaged over time and I thought I'd buy a new case and here the fun starts. I need a bracket to hold the CPU fan in place and where ever I go albeit Amazon nothing seems to fit. All the brackets that I see seem to be too small I've looked on the spec document (attached) and I see that the CPU is a INTEL Socket LGA1155 and I looked on Amazon and found one but when it came I tried it and it was too small.

.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me any ideas on how to secure the cpu fan to the board without damaging the mobo.

See Here for the manual http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c027871

There must be someone out there who can help

Many thanks

"Power supply insufficient" warning problem

$

Hello. I recently bought a refurbished Z440 online, and some ECC ram for it (64gb, 4 sticks of dual rank registered ECC ram). I have been able to install the RAM, and the computer runs just fine.

However, upon bootup I get warning 539 - Power supply wattage insufficient for LR dimm memory configuration

The thing is, the power supply says that it is a 700W power supply on the side of it. I believe that this is the "high power" option for the Z440 anyways, and regardless since I am running an SSD and no graphics card, 700W should be more than enough for one 150w CPU and 4 sticks of memory regardless of what type the memory is.

I cant even find any documentation as to which power supply would be required, or which one the computer thinks it has. Maybe it actually thinks 700W is insufficient and I need 1200W or something?? But I dont, because I have no graphics card.

Basically I just want the warning to go away. I know the power supply is sufficient. Otherwise I have to be present to press enter every time the machine reboots, which is a headache. I am open to any suggestions other than removing the memory!

Z620 new graphics card

Hi!

I have Z620 workstation and tried to install new graphics card Asus Strix Radeon R9 390 STRIX-R9390-DC3OC-8GD5-GAMING.

Installing the card to the primary PCIe slot, makes the computer beep 6 times and not waking up. Installing the card to the secondary slot wakes up the computer and everything works fine. Only problem is the size of the graphics card, it is so low that fans takes hit on cables and they wont work right.

What is the reason why the primary pcie slot doesnt work on new graphic card? Secondary works fine.

Working out if my PC is using RAID

$

Starting a new post st my previous one deviated a bit from the original topic. I'm looking for some help regarding RAID. I have a HPZ22O workstation and have never consciously set up RAID with it. I am looking to install a new HD and want to make sure RAID isn't going to 'take over' as I don't really want/ need it.

Basically I bought a new HD a little while back, I didn't know anything about RAID possibly being active so I just stuck the new hard drive in with the old one and mirrored/ cloned it using Seagate's programme, then put the new one in the first drive bay and disconnected the old one. I noticed after a short while that the new one was very noisy all of the time (the noise it makes when 'working' but all of the time) and I can't remember the exact issue but the cloning software/ my computer seemed to be able to pick up some kind of issue with it. Because of this I cloned it to the old one and started to use the old one again thinking I'd buy another new one, but then the old one failed which wasn't entirely unexpected given its age (6 years plus) but now I'm wondering whether I essentially upset the drives by working with them not knowing my system was possibly using RAID...

What I'm trying to work out now is, if I've never manually set up RAID, whether the PC uses it automatically, if that makes sense; ie if I insert more than one HD does the computer decide to use RAID and so if I try to use those disks independently, having in the past been unaware that RAID may be being used, I run into problems. I'm not sure how to find out and I am hesitant about installing a new HD I have 'til I know. Ideally I'd like to put the new HD in and then put in a second one and set it up to clone the first one every few days or so so I have an easily bootable backup of everything if the first disk fails, if that makes sense, but I'm not sure if that's feasible or if the fact I've been trying to do that (perhaps unaware that RAID is somehow involved) is actually what's damaged the current HD in the first place. I suppose what I'm finding it hard to find out is, if I haven't consciously configured disks in a RAID array (and indeed when they were both installed and working they were as far as I can recall showing up as two separate disks, which presumably means they weren't in RAID) does it happen automatically, if that makes sense.

Thank you so much and I hope that makes sense!

Now, I cant connect to the Internet
