how to find/configure IP for HP UPS R5500 XR with a NIC card

I installed a HP UPS Management card (similiar to a Part Number: 435656-004R on page 16) that lights up after I plugged it in to the 10/100 port. I've tried to connect to a switch and to another computer's NIC to find the IP address using DHCP and running ipconfig. It shows a 169. IP (Automatic Private Internet Protocol Addressing (APIPA)).

I installed the HPE UPS Power Protection Agent on a Windows computer, and tried it on a Fedora Linux server. Both never find the R5500 XR. The manual says to connect to a serial port with a DB-9 to RJ-45 adapter. Isn't there a way to just use the Ethernet card? Or do I have to the adapter?

I also tried this with the original serial card and no luck finding it in the software. Is the HP serial cable really needed if I went that route?
