HPZ800 shutdowns with GTX1080.

Hi there i have a Z800 box that i am working on...

Specs are as follows:

2x X5675

96GB 10600DDR3

1x EVGA GTX 1080 SC 8GB

850W PSU

The system operates normally under most conditions and is real champ so far.

The video card is attached via the 2x 6pin connectors.

When the box is running Civ 6, when certain characters appear, the computer will just shut down entirely... No warning, no BSOD, just powers off.  Seems to definitely GPU/PSU related.

I picked up a Molex power to 6pin PCI  to use as one of the PCI connectors and the problem has gone away...  However this eats away from the power available on the rails i was going to use for drives etc.  When i use the stock 6 pins, it starts to shut down again.

Are the 2x 6pin on different rails? I see each of the 6 pins has 18amp available on the rails which should be more than enough, but the system shuts down entirely when certain loads are placed upon it.  If i slightly alter the game settings the characters pass normally. (change to 4x AA rather than 8x, in games like Gears of War i have to lower the AA to off else it causes a shut down...).

I had an identical issue with a Lenovo d20, but the fix there was to split power across the rails (that box has 4x6pin)  There is no way to split power here unless i go ghetto and use the molex connectors.

Anyone know any reason it may be doing this?   Can anyone think of a fix?  I was looking @ an 1100w PSU for the unit but it seems to have the same 18A limitation on its rails... 36 amps should be enough to run the card, but there definitely seems to be a fallout here somewhere...

Thoughts, feelings?   I want to upgrade to a Z820 in the future, and it seems i will have the same problem there...?

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Thanks,

- B
